Blue Star Foundation Plans Armed Forces Day Events

MOBILE, ALABAMA, MAY 5, 2016 – The Blue Star Salute Foundation, Inc. will hold Alabama’s 12th annual Blue Star Salute Celebration on Saturday, May 21, Armed Forces Day, at USS ALABAMA Battleship Memorial Park, 2703 Battleship Parkway.  This is the fourth year that Mobile will host the state-wide celebration.  The events will focus on honoring those Alabamians who serve, have served, and those who have fallen in military service.

The Blue Star Salute events are free of charge and the public is invited to attend.  There is a $2 park service fee per car to enter Battleship Memorial Park.       

Schedule of events:

Tuesday, May 17, 3:00 p.m. – The Wall That Heals arrives at Battleship Memorial

 Park under motorcycle escort. 

Thursday, May 19, 8:00 a.m. – The Wall That Heals opens to the public for viewing.

Thursday, May 19, 10:00 a.m. – Opening Ceremony – The Wall That Heals. 

Friday, May 20, 1:00 p.m. – Reading of the Names of Alabama’s Fallen on The Wall 

That Heals -  9/11 Fallen Heroes Memorial stage.

Friday, May 20, 8:00 p.m. – Candlelight Ceremony – The Wall That Heals. 

Saturday, May 21, 7:00 a.m. – Alabama’s Fallen Heroes 5K Run and Walk and I-Mile

 Fun Run, with awards presented at 8:45 a.m. 

    Saturday, May 21, 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. – Displays, children’s activities and food

 vendors open. 

Saturday, May 21, 10:00 a.m. – Blue Star Salute Foundation Celebration including 

 presentation of colors on horseback by Buffalo Soldiers, music by Alabama 151st National 

Guard Band, vocals by Robert Robinson, keynote speaker Gen. Chuck Horner, USAF (Ret.),

 Iwo Jima Flag Raising reenactment, and more.

Saturday, May 21, 11:00 – 1:00 p.m. – Entertainment by the musical group Homeland.

Saturday, May 21, 1:00 p.m. – Gold Star Memorial Service for Alabama’s Fallen 

Heroes – 9/11 Fallen Heroes Memorial stage.

Sunday, May 22, 5:00 p.m. – Closing Ceremony - The Wall That Heals.   

    On-line registration for the Blue Star Salute Memorial 5k Run/Walk and Fun Run is available at through 4:00 a.m. on May 20.  Registration forms can be picked up at McCoy’s Outdoor, Run-N-Tri, and Fleet Feet in Mobile and Running Wild in Fairhope.  Runners can run in honor of an Alabamian who is currently serving in the military or in memory of someone who has served.  Names will be imprinted on each runner’s bib.  Packet pickup will be held at Port City Pacers Office on Friday, May 20 from noon to 6:00 p.m.  Proceeds from the run benefit the Blue Star Salute Foundation, Inc. and the families they serve.
